Tips to Feeling Happier at Work

Find that your employees are feeling unmotivated and dreading going to work? Or that they are counting down the hours till when they can officially knock off for the day?  

You are not alone. 

Statistics show that a whopping 50% of employees tend to be unsatisfied and disengaged at work. 

While achieving happiness at the workplace may seem like a tough goal, for the sake of your employees’ mental health and the productivity of the team, it may be worthwhile to give these few tips a try! 


1. Discover Work Motivators 

If your employees often feel dissatisfied at work, chances are the work they do has a huge disconnect from their intrinsic values.  

Are they someone who continually seeks new personal bests? Or someone who seeks security in their environment? Unable to put a finger on exactly what keeps them going? Ask them to take this simple quiz to discover what drives them 

Once you have that figured out, it’s time to bridge the gap between their beliefs and the work they do – and happiness and satisfaction will not be far behind.  


2. Create Better Work Fit 

Continuing to slog away doing the same thing they have done for years is not going to automatically make them happier.  

Instead of letting them passively work out their issues, consider speaking to them about their motivations, strengths, and ambitions and see if you could redesign their roles and assign duties that are more suited to them.  


3. Perform An “Energy” Stock-Take 

Can’t pinpoint exactly what makes them unhappy at work? It’s time for an “energy” stock-take – a simple exercise to help your employees review what exactly is sapping away their “energy” at work. 

Ask them to list down their to-do list for the week – include intentional actions and events and unintentional distractions (as they come up). 

At the end of every day, note down which activities have contributed to their energy levels. At the end of the week, do a stock take on everything. Reflect if any activities affect them the most and see if they need to make any changes to their schedule to provide time to decompress after a negative activity or to mitigate their stress. 


4. Reject Hustle Culture 

Say no to the toxicity that is hustle culture. Sufficient rest and work-life balance are critical for everyone’s well-being. Do not let anyone persuade you otherwise. 

Unless it is an absolute emergency at work, encourage your employees to leave life office work behind when they leave for the day.  


5. Encourage Meaningful Work Relationships 

Humans are a social species. As such, inevitably, our happiness is closely interlinked with our relationships with others.  

At the workplace, this means connecting and building meaningful work relationships with colleagues so that they can have a support system in place – whether it is to bounce ideas off, rant about work, or celebrate meaningful moments together. 

Consider informal and formal work arrangements like buddy systems, mentor-mentee arrangements, social clubs, and more, to encourage them to form these relationships while at work.
